Tasmania bliss

I am back from a much anticipated trip to Tasmania. I have a lot of family there as my Dad was born there and going back is extremely relaxing. We somehow got AMAZING weather the whole 8 days (pretty much unheard of in Tas).

It certainly is!

What went down:

-Long awaited visit to MONA (wow)

-Lazing on my favourite beach in the world, 40 mins from Hobart (location unable to be disclosed to -due the risk of over-population :p)

-Drive around the Huon Trail through Cygnet, Kettering, Glaziers bay- stopping for lunch at the beautiful Peppermint Bay and visiting some small wineries.

-Drive through Ross, Richmond and Oatlands scouring all the little antique and gift shops (purchased some serious vintage tableware gems)

- The obligatory visit to Salamanca and Battery Point to places like The Maker and the Jackman and McRoss bakery (the chocolate brioche is highly recommended)

Birthday Decorations

This year for my birthday we 'borrowed' the communal area of our flat and threw a relaxed little birthday and housewarming soiree.

I went to the Sydney flower markets early on Saturday and collected a whole bunch of Poppy's and Snapdragons.I also draped 44 metres of cheesecloth over our funny old clothes line to provide some shade, along with some of my hippy-esque scarves adding more splashes of pattern and colour. It was THE most beautiful day, sunny and breezy. Funnily enough I think that the planning of the decoration was just as fun as the actual day !

Having a home day today after a pretty busy week. Tidying through various computer folders and just found these lil' ones lying haphazardly in a desktop folder. I scanned these in last year when putting together a portfolio. I love how they look so 3 dimensional like a photograph.

I must make time to make more of these- they are good for attaching to gift wrapping or a blank card or even propping up on a mantel piece for some colour.

Decoration with Maps

Recently I decorated a friends wedding. They live in Brazil so it was done via correspondence. The loose theme was 'travel' as they met travelling and have done a lot since together- not to mention their travels to Australia for the wedding. I chose to use old maps to make some feature lanterns that wouldn't cost too much to make.

The venue was a challenge as nearly everything was a different shade of blue. This meant that a lot of the decoration was more like damage control, covering everything in white really helped.

I made two small tiered chandeliers that sat above the seating and one large draping style one above the dance floor.

Neon obsession

Neon signs have been on my mind of late. I really just want to use one in a design project or even around my house.

Penny Farthing Design House are selling this one below which would suit me perfectly (I am an 'oops' kind of girl)!

This pink sign is also a favourite that I had squirrelled away.

There are also some fantastic uses of Neon lighting and signage on their blog.

moving in!

PK and I are finally moving the Sydney's inner west.

Packing, decorating, working, studying, wedding decorating- we are doing it all at the moment.

It is so long since we saw the apartment on 'open for Inspection' day that i totally forgot about the TERRIBLE brown 70's carpet. It has ruined all my decorating plans so now I am researching DIY floor coverings for rentals.

Not really the solution but the picture here is a great DIY rug option.

How can so many designers from one country have such fantastic taste?

Much to my surprise PK gave me a lovely little gift before I left for Hobart.

Helped by his close friend and resident jewellery specialist Madeleine, he ordered two 'Cloud brooches' from one of Madeleine's fellow Brisbane jeweller Paper Boat Press.

Short sojourn to Tasmania

Just a quick hello from Hobart. I know I just got back from jetsetting around parts of South America, but this is different!!

Half of my family live down here and it's been years since I visited. It is the perfect time of year to come and see Tassie, the climate is warm and sunny, the annual Wooden Boat Show is on in the city and there are lots of little markets to visit.

I will be taking lots of snaps today and perhaps I will share those that make that cut.

This could be something i start doing a lot- clustering images I have coveted for a while and putting them together so that i can just lust over them collectively (saves my lusting energy perhaps?!). It gives me a sense of accomplishment. Its kind of like introducing two friends from two different circles and them instantly clicking!

A simple yet effective combination

I squirreled this image away a few weeks ago and it has continued to catch my eye.

It's something about the combination of the dark walls (to which I am addicted), jumbled yet styled cushions and frames, the red 'pop' of colour and last but not least, that beautiful use of negative space to the right. A simple yet effective combination.

Just killing some time. PK has been playing around with his new iTouch and the Hipstamatic prints App. Here is one if the shots.

We are sad to be leaving Rio and our friends here, i really learned to love it here. The whole atmosphere is very casual and relaxed. Think little bars in back streets with plastic chairs, cheap drinks and good little plates of food. Think beaches like Ipanema which are so stunning, enjoyable (you sit under an umbrella and people walk past and sell you your food and drinks!!) and accessible. Think havaiana flip flops as the national footwear for the majority of occasions.

Its been fun. x

Citta Design- New Zealand

At my last job at a well known furniture and homewares wholesaler I had a discussion with one of our customers about a New Zealand supplier that she loved. She encouraged me to have a look at their website and so I popped on over and I was very impressed.

They are an Auckland based wholesaler who distribute all around the world.

The website is great and there are great examples of simple styling. It is worth a look.

Over the Last 2 years I have travelled a lot ! (I think I am up to something like 30 countries) Part of my lust for travel is based on a constant craving for design inspiration. I am often photographing decorative details (doors, patterns, colours, architectual features) .

New year, more blogging...

I have had this blog for a few years, but most of my time is spent looking at other peoples blogs. Maybe it is because I am a little shy when it comes to my creativity...
Well 2011 is the time to shine I say. I have quit my job and I am going back to being a student - I am now more actively pursuing a career in Interiors and styling.

I am blogging from Rio de Janeiro at the moment, I am on holiday living with friends of ours who have moved to Copacabana. Good start to the year I must say! Here a few snaps of interesting bits of pieces from Brazil!

Its funny, I used to be a very, erm, quirky eater. That is until i started dating a half Italian with a very good cook for a mother. Everything changed. Further to this, when I moved to London on my own I started experimenting with things that were cheaper, seasonal and more abundant. Mushrooms were one of the no-goes prior to PK. Now I cant get enough of them, i could almost substitute them for meat.

Snow day!

Coolest day in London yet...hah literally. No ...i couldnt get to work..there was so much snow! The rail and bus system pretty much shut down. Instead of going to work, I walked to work with PK...helped them set up at the pub. It got super busy because people werent at work. I helped collect glasses, fold cutlery napkins etc...it was a really fun vibe everywhere... It the first time i had seen snow fall. COOL!

First day of spring in London....

So I am coming up to my 5th month living in London (one being my boy PK). Today is the first day of spring and my moods are high! I have survived working the winter and was even lucky enough to encounter a good dose of snowfall and the excitement that surrounds not having to go to work because there was too much snow. For me - it was the first time seeing snow fall, let alone having to wade through snowy slush to try and get to work in the city...only to discover that the only people waiting for the non existent buses were snow men. I didnt realise that the city comes to such a standstill over a little snow!

Unfortunately, PK had to go to work in the pub, as they were expecting lots of people to turn up because when people dont go to work, they go to the pub!?!

Today..my housemate and I literally spring cleaned! We also had an ikea delivery of a table and sofa bed. We made the trek out towards Croydon yesterday on the train and tram and got into the spirit of the ikea shopping experience, testing things out, eating the cheap chips and hotdogs and pushing each other around on trolleys.

One Year Celebration

PK and I went on a celebratory dinner date to celebrate (roughly) one year since our first date (we cant remember the date exactly). First we went to the Beauchamp Hotel for a drink before dinner. Next, we went and saw a movie...a strange, unromantic flick which we wont go into (plans were changed as the movie we wanted to see wasnt featuring on that night). Anyway...

We then went to "The Victoria Room" and had a lovely tropical cocktail to start..and then tapas for dinner to share. The most awesome food i have had in AGES! Little dishes made to share with amazing flavours, consumed in such a beautiful and bohemian environment. For Dessert we had a little dessert trolley with a range of different treats like rocky road, turkish delight etc...

Ah...Lovely night!

Easter Activities

I had a very boring Easter... I watched some pretty funny episodes of Flight of the Conchords. It is really my sense of humour exactly.

This is AWESOME! I cant get it out of my head!

The only other exciting thing i did was go to a Hucks night..a combined Hens and Bucks night at the GPO building in the city at Martin Place. This old building has been gutted and re invented with various bars and a restaurant.. It was really beautiful inside and i had some fantastic food!

After dinner we saw a show called Crystal Boudoir... it was really enthralling and very full on!

"City Woman" says:

"It's a fantastic show with some seriously jaw dropping moments. Even a communal gasp from the audience at one point. The costume design is outstanding, eye catching, thought provoking and racy. We were definitely able to appreciate the flexibility, sensuality and talent. The choreography is slick, intelligent, hip, chic and sexy. And that's not all, there's a saxophonist playing sexy grooves to keep the vibe going between shows as well as a sweet singing soulful sister we fell in love with."

After spending a few hours there, we moved on to ZETA bar at the hilton for a little bit...very funny getting in there, it involved a lift, an invisible stamp and a beautiful view of the the Queen Victoria Building across the road!

I have always been attracted to pictures of childrens rooms. It's probably because it's the only place where you can paint a weird colour or draw a picture on the wall etc without people thinking you're slightly unusual. It could also be because i have always been attracted to pastels.

I like the idea of using green in kid's room's too, it is a very organice and isnt really gender specific.

I have been scouring webpages like growmodern.com and cookiemag.com for these inspirational pics.

You can get away with so much morein kids rooms than in regular decorating - seems like much more fun!

Brunch!

Recently celebrated my birthday by hosting a brunch with a few family friends.. It was a perfect day with lots of cakes and beautiful gifts! The cupcakes were made by a special friend of ours, Jenny. They were velvet style butter cupcakes.

For my Actual birthday I went to Pancakes at the rocks with a whole bunch of my friends, which was really nice. Paul gave me a special necklace made by his friend Madeliene Brown. It is a locket which slides open side ways. I could not have been more blown away by the beauty and uniqueness of this gift! It is so special..

I was also given this Tord Boontje book by the Managers at work. It is so detailed and beautiful, it has a kind of gauze covering on it and the inside pages are pin pricked in different patterns

Valentines and Vases

I was lucky enough to be given this Kokeshi Doll for Valentines Day from PK... Even though he tricked me and said that he didnt believe in the day he still made this appear on my shelf towards the end of the evening. Tricky boy he is!

My present to PK was a little bean that grows and opens up with a special message...cool but not quite as good as Ms Kokeshi below. Not much could top her... i had been eyeing it off in the Galeries Victoria recently. You win PK.

This is a vase i bought on my last trip to Avalon, Palm beach. It is very simple and a really nice organic shape but unfortunately i dropped a tea cup on it whilst arranging my shelf in my room and now it has a well placed hole in it...which i have tried to highlight as a feature rather than a flaw since (not visible in the pictures above) .

Tasmania- Falls Festival and Family

So we just spent about 2 weeks in Tasmania...It went a little something like this:

Missed our flight to Hobart because we went to the wrong terminal!!
Flew to Launceston instead

Hired a car and drove to pick up our friend from sandy bay in Hobart

Drove to the festival in Marion bay

set up our humble tent and enjoyed the lovely Falls festival. We had a fantastic NYE!

The time came to leave on the 1st of Jan. 1 hour of driving later (all a little hungover)...realised we had gone in the wrong direction. Oops.

Drove back in the right direction to where our friend was staying and drove to my Aunty's house to sleep, eat and get cleaned up (gosh we needed it!)

Stocked up on supplies for our coastal trip

Set off up the East coast.

Drove through Port Arthur, Pirates bay and camped at Friendly beach at Freycinet.

Next day we did the wine glass bay walk and nearly cried due to being so unfit- ran into some friends and drove to St Helens to meet up with them and camp at a free camping ground.

Beautiful day in St helens and the Bay of Fires- had coffee at a really nice cafe overlooking binnalong bay.

Drove to Launceston and walked Cataract Gorge...had some dinner and tried to sleep at the cute little pub we were staying at (was a bit loud)

Met my parents in Devenport from the ferry and drove back to Launceston.

From here it was mostly family, seafood, dolphins and weddings...awesome trip.

Friday night:

Nothing to do so mum and dad said that they were 'hitting up' the local bowling club (woot woot!)..I mentioned this to my friends Marnie and Emma and they obliged. Neighbours turned up, dinner was eaten and drinks were had. Locals can be fun!

So ahh..turns out i am extremely unflexible. And that i NEED to do yoga, so i bought a ten pass and now im commited to reaching my toes and not having a "bottom overhang" eww.

I havnt felt the aftermath of pain yet, but when i do i shall let you know. Its coming.

Australia Day afternoon

Yesterday i went to Philtrons house with Marnie..we didnt get there till 6 cos i had been working all day, but we made it there in time for the top 5 on triple J Hottest one hundred so we were happy with that. We wound up walking on the roof which was scary but fun and entertained us for a good 45 mins

We sat on the porch and talked to people who walked past. Watched a bit of Blue Crush on tele (i may have slipped into a state of sleep for about 5 mins too). People came and went as did marnie and i. We went to go get Orange juice at one point and a scary drug addict followed us into the convenience store and pretended to look at Car-care products and then followed us out when we left. NYE had no real plans but went out with Kristen from work and her friends...

Had a fun night eating and eating and then watching the fireworks at the bottom of Balmain...

Me and the fam went to pittwater near palm beach the other day to have out christmas day style get together that we missed at chrissy..i got massively sun burnt playing frisbee (i found a new talent eyy!) Mum played around with the camera and took some happy snaps of Lau and I.

After lunch we visited some of mum and dads friends nearby, they have an awesome house up in the tree tips, we had tea on some pillows on the deck - it was kinda surreal but cool all the same.

What can i report...Christmas has been and gone, and so have the christmas retail stresses. I got to wear a cool green tee for the clearance sale on the weekend -woo!

Went to Budgewoi for christmas as always, stayed with my nan and ate lots. Hung at the beach, played darts, saw one of my besties and took photos..

A little bit of wine may have still been in my system from the night before..

I haven't been sharing all of my news of late.
Firstly it was my birthday, i had a nice little gathering of friends and family for my bday celebrations- I felt very loved :) I got some fantastic presents too..the Florence Broadhurst book (amazing), a book an australian ex-pat in france, some beautiful jewellery, a great travel book by lonely planet, a leona edmiston slip dress and a soft leather hand bag.

I had a really great weekend...

Laid back friday night with friends, drinks and some tele, got up early sat did some room tidying, went to the Dinosaur Designs bumper sale in Strawberry Hills, spent gazillions of dollars on beatiful homewares...had coffee and spent the day with a friend..the weather was fantastic - first weekend of spring had a summerish feeling...

Had a lazy afternoon at Sarahs new house, reading mags on the deck and musing of decorating her house etc...

Decided to stay for dinner, went to shops to make a morrocan tagine meal..which took a good few hours - then watched Donny Darko with my hands over my face everytime the scary bunny 'frank' popped up.

Today i simply came home and spent the rest of the day lazing, helping mum organise everything for our huge garage sale next weekend- found so many great items from when i was young...

It's finally my day off.

Unfortunately its very cold and grey.. which means that im sitting here like a piece of lard instead of doing exciting things. I had dreams of sunbaking.. maybe having a bit of a picnic and reading a magazinein the warmth of the sun...no such luck. Instead im sitting here in my multi-coloured dressing gown eating toooo much cereal!

Oh,Also I'm sick. Great. On the upside i had great thai for lunch, clear soup with chicken and vegies...so good when your sick!

I have actually done something fun with the day.I played around taking some pictures of things around the house and I was quite pleased with the results.

Lots has happened this part week. I have been for interviews, been on trips away, worked a lot and quit my job...because i have been hired at Freedom Furniture for the Moment.

Also I have been ona little trip away, my friend Marnie and I went on a last pilgrimage trip to her Nan's holiday house on the water where we will never stay again. We wanted to go one last time and have a bit of a gathering with some friends of mine who live up that way.

Sunny bedroom days...A rare moment where my bedroom was semi-clean and sunny at the same time!...i can actually lie in the sun on my bed..its a rare luxury...

Also....lately i have had a bit of a stocking 'thing'...suddenly i see them as the ultimate accessory...i found this article:

How to Wear Stockings

Looking well put together and stylish is not something that is left only to the jacket, tops, pants, skirts and dresses you wear; your look lies heavily on accessories. Stockings are one accessory that have the power to make your legs look fantastic simply by the color you choose and how you choose to wear them. Of course, if choosing the correct stocking for your outfit has the power to make you look great; the opposite can be said about poorly chosen stockings. The question is how to choose stockings that will make your legs look their absolute best.

1.Skirts that fall at the knee or an inch above the knee look best in sheer stockings. Do not wear opaque stockings with this length skirt; it will make you look frumpy. Be careful of wearing short skirts (4 inches above the knee) with nude stockings unless you are still in your 20’s, have great legs, or you are attending a party.
2.Thick, patterned, plaid, floral stockings are best used for artistic, funky looks. If you would like to bring a patterned stocking into your classic wardrobe the best way to do this is to wear them under pants, choosing a small print
3. When wearing short-sleeved and sleeveless tops or light sheer fabrics choose a nude/skin tone hose. Match the color of the hose as closely to the color of your skin as possible. Anything different than that will have an unnatural appearance.
4. Opaque stockings look best worn with long skirts and short skirts during fall and winter. Off-white or bone stockings will make your legs appear larger and are not usually a good choice.

5. Sandals or open shoes do not look great with opaque stockings.
These are just a few points to keep in mind when choosing your stockings. Another tip is to always keep an extra pair with you in case you get a snag or run. This is especially true if you are attending an important event or are being interviewed.

Incu, Galleries Victoria + Paddington stores, Sydney CBD

It's a bit of a ' design mecca' if you ask me. They stock brands that have heard of but haven't been able to find. Although i am yet to buy anything from there (mainly because of my empty purse) you can find items which aren't going to be found in the shop down the street. They seem to stock a lot of cute tees, great jewellery (like 'Tatty Devine') and oh-so-cute labels such as Sewn and loverthelabel ...two of my faves.'

Incu style is edgy, quirky, arty , unique, classic, ironic, emotive. It has a gallery style feel with a warm atmosphere. Verdict: well worth visiting.

Sundays are for Musing..

Well, its sunday..
And I get overly inspired on sundays -I blame the abundance of creative reading material i get in my sunday paper dosage..
Anyway, today i decided it was time for blog # 2...
Although i have stuck at livejournal for almost a year...i find it sometimes uninspiring, and it often stops me from visiting blogs over here. I admit, its sheer laziness, however easy access is a sure fire way to get me reading and interacting with people that have long inspired me.
